{"id":266,"date":"2016-11-30T21:25:42","date_gmt":"2016-12-01T02:25:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.davidselby.com\/blog\/?p=266"},"modified":"2016-11-30T21:25:42","modified_gmt":"2016-12-01T02:25:42","slug":"a-white-picket-fence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.davidselby.com\/blog\/2016\/11\/30\/a-white-picket-fence\/","title":{"rendered":"A White Picket Fence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-267\" src=\"http:\/\/www.davidselby.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/picket-fences-349713_1920-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"A White Picket Fence\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.davidselby.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/picket-fences-349713_1920-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.davidselby.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/picket-fences-349713_1920-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.davidselby.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/picket-fences-349713_1920-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.davidselby.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/picket-fences-349713_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The myth of a white picket fence has<br \/>\nalways held some attraction for me.<br \/>\nIts looks ordered, cozy, inviting<br \/>\ndespite its role of protector<br \/>\nof what looms on the other side.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve never seen a lock<br \/>\non a gate<br \/>\nof a white picket fence.<br \/>\nThe white picket fence does for the house<br \/>\nwhat a fine frame does for the painting<br \/>\nit draws you in<br \/>\nsomeone in there cares<br \/>\nsomeone you can trust<br \/>\nwho knows the value<br \/>\nof a good rocker<br \/>\nwith wide arms and high back<br \/>\nwho craves the rich creamy<br \/>\ntaste of a peanut butter sandwich.<br \/>\nIsn&#8217;t that a blackberry cobbler on the window sill?<br \/>\nSo you know stashed in the ice box<br \/>\nis a half eaten quart of genuine<br \/>\nfrench vanilla ice-cream.<br \/>\nYes whoever lives there understands<br \/>\nabout the time of you and me<br \/>\nspread-eagled on a sunny grassy knoll<br \/>\nwhen the wind blew away time<br \/>\nleaving only peace and grace.<\/p>\n<p>Is there a lovelier word than grace?<br \/>\nOr a lovelier sight<br \/>\nthan a Christmas tree with lights?<br \/>\nIt has taken me too long<br \/>\nto learn about grace<br \/>\nthough I&#8217;ve been in its company for years<br \/>\nbut I always knew about Christmas tree lights.<br \/>\nI would lie on the couch<br \/>\nin the dark<br \/>\nbut for the many colored lights<br \/>\nand a pocketful of hope<br \/>\nsquint my eyes<br \/>\nmaking a kaleidoscope of dancing lights.<br \/>\nThere was no time<br \/>\nonly the tree, the lights and me.<br \/>\nI was in their grace<br \/>\nat the altar snug and warm and safe<br \/>\nhappy as a picket fence.<\/p>\n<p>I have foolishly spent an inordinate<br \/>\namount of time searching<br \/>\nfor my white picket fence.<br \/>\nPerhaps that is why<br \/>\nthe pages of Unique Homes<br \/>\nheld such allure drawing my eyes to<br \/>\nthe white fences of Lexington, Kentucky<br \/>\nthe white barns and houses on<br \/>\nthe rolling hill farms of Charlottesville, Va.<br \/>\nthe white fogged ridges of Ashville, N.C.<br \/>\nthe white birches of Vermont<br \/>\nthe white waves and sand of Big Sur<br \/>\nthe white clouds of a San Francisco penthouse<br \/>\nthe great white way of New York<br \/>\nbut still no white picket fence.<\/p>\n<p>It is Christmas time again.<br \/>\nThe beloved tree is adorned.<br \/>\nI lie on the couch<br \/>\nwatch the lights<br \/>\nmusic is in the air<br \/>\nand though time is harder to hold still<br \/>\nI believe that Santa is near<br \/>\nand he knows my name.<br \/>\nI am snug and warm and safe<br \/>\nin a manger under my tree of lights<br \/>\nwith a white picket fence around me.<\/p>\n<p>I have always clung to my Christmas tree<br \/>\nas a child to its mother hoping<br \/>\ndespite my limitations and frustrations<br \/>\nI belonged and someday I would find<br \/>\nmy white picket fence.<br \/>\nWell I did find it<br \/>\nwhen I realized that grace wasn&#8217;t just<br \/>\nthe name of my next-door neighbor<br \/>\nwhen I accepted grace<br \/>\nas the love and favor of my wife and children<br \/>\nand of my friends.<br \/>\nSo if God is everywhere<br \/>\nthen God is in each of you<br \/>\nand each of you<br \/>\nis a light on my Christmas tree<br \/>\nand each of you<br \/>\nis a stake<br \/>\nin my white picket fence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Webmaster&#8217;s Note:<\/strong> &#8220;A White Picket Fence&#8221; appears in\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidselby.com\/books\/happenstance.htm\">Happenstance<\/a><\/em>, a poetry collection by David Selby.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The myth of a white picket fence has always held some attraction for me.
